  • Cleanability: Pharmaceutical chiller components that may require cleaning should be designed for CIP (Clean-In-Place) or accessible for manual cleaning. Smooth internal surfaces with no dead legs are required in clean areas.

Ultra-Low Temperature Cascade Chiller — −80°C Systems

For applications requiring cooling to −80°C — vaccine and biological sample storage, ultra-low temperature API processing, and lyophiliser support — a cascade refrigeration system is required. A single-stage compressor cannot economically achieve −80°C; cascade systems use two separate refrigeration circuits in series:

  • High-temperature stage: Operates between approximately +30°C and −30°C, using a standard refrigerant (R404A, R448A, or similar).
  • Low-temperature stage: Operates between approximately −30°C and −80°C, using a low-temperature refrigerant (R23, R508B, or similar).
  • The two stages are connected through a cascade heat exchanger — the condenser of the low-temperature stage is cooled by the evaporator of the high-temperature stage.
