Have you been searching for a reliable refrigeration system?

Need something for the dehumidification of air?

Or you need help cooling fluids in your different settings?

Your answer is here – An air cooled chiller.

Here, you will get the complete guide regarding air cooled chillers.

What Does An Air Cooled Chiller Mean?

Figure 1 Air-cooled chiller

Figure 1: An Air cooled chiller

An air cooled chiller is a system for dehumidifying air and/or cooling fluids.

You can utilize it in both industrial and commercial facilities.

How Does An Air Cooled Chiller Work?

Air cooled chillers function by absorbing heat from process water.

It then transfers it to the air surrounding the chiller unit.

This chiller is suitable in applications where the discharge of extra heat isn’t a problem. Rather, it offers some benefits.

For example, you can use the extra heat produced in warming a specified area during winter.

This saves costs compared to traditional heating systems.

What Differentiates An Air Cooled Chiller From A Water-Cooled Chiller?

Air cooled chillers come with a condenser, and it gets its cooling from the air in the environment.

You can use them for medium and small installations.

However, due to recent improvements in their structure, you can use them for large installations as well.

Water-cooled chillers, on the other hand, feature water-cooled condensers.

These condensers have a cooling tower.

They work well for large and medium installations where there’s enough water available.

Water-cooled chillers are also useful where there’s a need for the system to perform constantly, without the ambient temperature.

This is because fluctuations in the ambient temperature do not affect the capacity of water-cooled chillers.

Do Air Cooled Chillers Require Cooling Towers?

An air cooled chiller can make use of your open spaces like roofs, parking lots, or any area with ground level.

Therefore, there’s no need for you to get cooling towers, in contrast to water-cooled chillers that require them.

Where Can I Use My Chiller?

Chillers cool items by emitting high-heat such as lasers and MRI machines.

You can use them on campuses, hotels, and hospitals.

Also use them in restaurants, manufacturing, and industrial plants, corporate events, and sporting events.

What Gas Can I Use In My Chiller?

Concerning the low-medium capacity chillers, you will need to make use of R-407C and R-410A.

For larger applications, you should use R-123 and R-134a.

Which Is Better: Air Cooled Chillers Or Water-Cooled Chillers?

Water-cooled chillers are better because they feature a cooling tower, which is absent in air cooled chillers.

With this, you will get more efficiency from water-cooled chillers.

What Are The Benefits Of Utilizing Air Cooled Chillers?

Some of the benefits of air cooled chillers include low maintenance costs, no water costs, especially in the cities.

Others include easy operation, cooling towers absent, and no water issues to deal with.

What Is The Right Temperature For An Air Chiller?

Generally, for cooling equipment, temperatures that fall within 45 – 60 degrees are okay.

However, for pharmaceutical reasons, the recommended temperature should be within 35 – 46 degrees.

What Are The Major Components Of An Air Cooled Chiller?

The main components of an air cooled chiller include the condenser, condenser fans, compressor, expansion valve, evaporator, controls unit, and power panel.

What Is An Air Cooled Chiller Condenser And What Do They Do?

Figure 4 Air-cooled chiller condenser

Figure 4: Air cooled Chiller Condenser

Air cooled chiller condensers are horizontal pipes containing the hot refrigerant.

Some thin metal sheets in the vertical axis surround them.

They take away heat from the tubes and distribute them into the air.

This heat is then blown across thin metal sheets and tubes.

What Are The Condenser Fans Of Air Cooled Chillers Used For?

The condenser fans suck air all through the coils of the condenser, coming in through the sides.

They then force out this air to the unit’s top. This air then goes into the atmosphere.

What Is The Purpose Of The Chiller?

A chiller’s purpose is to transfer heat from one location (a product or process equipment) to the other (usually the air surrounding the facility).

Do We Need Water In An Air Cooled Chiller?

Air cooled chillers need hydration. A side of the evaporators of air cooled chillers takes the refrigerant. Water goes into the other side.

A separate water tank is usually present in air cooled chillers for common use.

What Are The Benefits Of A Water-Cooled Chiller Over An Air Cooled Chiller?

  • Water-cooled chillers come with a condensing temperature. This temperature is slightly lower compared to air cooled chillers.
  • The compressor efficiency of water-cooled chillers is better than that of air cooled chillers.
  • Physically, they are smaller
  • They are the most economical. So, they offer a simple repair and maintenance
  • Lesser noise generated during operation than the air cooled chillers

What Is The Maximum Capacity Of An Air Cooled Chiller And Why?

A maximum capacity could mean many things. It could mean cooling capacity, heating power, or chiller power.

Your modular chiller can have capacities of more than 1,000 tons.

For cooling capacity, it could reach 200kw. The chiller’s power could reach 280kw.

Chiller’s maximum heating power could reach 200kw.

Can An Air Cooler Cool A Room?

Yes, air coolers can help in cooling your room.

They are cheap alternatives in the summer season, in contrast to the air conditioners.

Air coolers are cost-effective and work via evaporation.

Blow hot air to pass through the already water-soaked cooling pads.

They can cool more than just a room depending on the size

What Must I Do To Ensure Proper Cooling In A Room?

To ensure you get your room properly cooled, make sure you take care of the following:

  • Your room must be well-ventilated
  • Make sure you add some ice to the water
  • Ensure you saturate the cooling pads before you use them
  • Take proper care of the air coolers

What Are The Safety Protections Of Industrial Air Cooled Chillers?

The safety protection of air cooled chillers include devices that help to protect your chiller.

These possible problems include high head pressure, freeze-ups, high motor temperature, short cycle, and low flow, among others.

Protectors include low voltage protector, leakage circuit breaker, and high-temperature protector, among others.

What Are The Common Errors In Air Cooled Chillers?

Some common errors in air cooled chillers include:

Frosting of the compressor suction pipe. This may be because of the improper drainage of the system.

It could also mean the blockage of the system pipeline

Condensation pressure is too high. It happens when your refrigerant is too much.

This makes the temperature of the outside air too high.

If it is too low. This could mean your chiller’s refrigerant is not sufficient.

Also, may mean damage to the compressor of the chiller is damaged.

Excessive heat pressure and excessive suction.

This could happen if the expansion valve is not properly adjusted.

Does An Air Cooled Chiller Need Water?

Chiller means a machine for water chilling. So, you must use water.

When we mean air-cooled, we mean the chiller’s cooling type of condenser.

For air cooled chillers, the air cools the condenser using the cooling tower.

They surely need hydration. One side of its evaporator takes the refrigerant, while water is taken into the other side.

Can I Find Air Cooled Chillers Having Inbuilt Pumps In The Market?

Yes, you can find air cooled chillers with inbuilt pumps.

They are referred to as swamp coolers, and they can be bought online.

Naturally, chillers are specially designed to solve conditioning or cooling need(s).

Pumps are made to ensure that the brine or chilled water, or cooling water gets to its destination and back.

These pumps do their work consuming very low power and ensuring it completes its task perfectly.

The pump selection and design must be tailor-made with respect to site conditions.

What Could Cause Air Pockets In An Air Cooled Chiller’s Evaporator?

Four things could cause this.

Leakage of a corrosive liquid or steam with high temperature

The leakage could happen in the equipment, flange, and pipeline weld.

It could also happen in other weak links like the expansion joint and sealing filler.

It is caused by cracking due to cold contraction and thermal expansion while starting up and shutting down.

This can also happen due to corrosion and stress impact.

The blockage of the pipeline valve

Crystallization happens with increases in material concentration.

This results in the blockage of the heater, valves, pipelines, etc.

When this happens, the materials will not circulate thereby affecting the smooth operation of evaporation.

Method of troubleshooting for the evaporator’s high temperature

It could be that the expansion valve opening is too large.

Also, mean that there’s too much refrigerant coming into the evaporator.

This can be caused by a very high condensation temperature.

Due to this, there is an increase in the evaporation temperature.

Very low evaporation temperature

This could be caused by three things:

  • The expansion valve’s opening is too small or blockage of the expansion valve.
  • There is not enough refrigerant substituting liquid. Due to this, just a little refrigerant enters the evaporator. This causes part of the surface area not to be able to partake in heat exchange.
  • The chilled water’s temperature present in the evaporator is either frozen or too low.

What Does Superheat In Air Cooled Chillers Mean?

Superheat in air cooled chillers refers to when there’s poor heat dissipation in the condenser.

It could also be that the compressor’s efficiency is low, or there’s an increase in the running current.

When its high-pressure pressure increases to 24kg/cm2, this could happen; the compressor trips off below the high-pressure switch’s protection, which will halt the running of the compressor.

The high-pressure overload caused as a result of poor heat dissipation will reveal the fault indication or fault code.

How Can I Improve An Air Cooled Chiller’s Efficiency?

To improve the efficiency of air cooled chillers, please follow these:

  • Make sure you clean your air cooled chiller regularly.
  • Don’t start and stop the switch button frequently.
  • Ensure that there are ventilation and drying in the refrigerator room.
  • Don’t stack combustibles or sundries close to your air cooled chiller.
  • Check from time to time to ensure the system’s water supply is normal. The system should never experience a water shortage.
  • Before you start the air cooled chiller, preheat the compressor. Then you turn on the power supply.
  • Clean your chiller’s inner fin heat exchanger regularly. This is to ensure heat exchange.
  • Never allow non-professional personnel to dismantle or change the unit. If your unit has any problem, get a professional to check and solve the problem immediately.
  • Ensure that no stacking materials or high wall are in front of the chiller’s exhaust fan. This could cause a blockage of the exhaust passage. The refrigeration effect could be affected as well.
  • If you will be shutting down the unit for long, try to drain the pipeline’s water. This is to prevent cracking and freezing due to a drop in temperature.

Why Don’t We Have Air Cooled Chillers Larger Than 500 Ton R?

The capacity at which chillers begin to make sense economically is 500 tons.

If you want an air cooled chiller that produces over 500 tons, then you could do it.

This is because the heat transfer surface limits air cooled chillers.

Air cooled chillers reject heat by the air coming in from both sides.

It cools the hot condenser coil which the condenser fans have blown up.

All you need is to install many chillers with many pumps.

At least, this gives you partial capacity in case one of the systems breaks.

How Can I Create An Air Cooled Chiller’s Part Load Performance Table?

It is possible by making use of load banks to stimulate part-load conditions.

Most times, this happens before shipment in the factory when a client requests it.
